Clips are organized into 6 categories: Movies, TV Programs, Game Shows, Music Videos, Advertisements and Others. These are self explanatory, however the Others category contains both clips that don't fit the other categories, and clips where it isn't obvious where they should fit. There are some good clips in this section, so don't overlook it!
You can also browse by clip source. This indicates the type of media the clip came from, and will give an idea of the quality.
- Hires DVD - Full resolution digital capture from DVD. These are the best quality clips on the site.
- DVD - Captured from DVD, but at reduced resolution or via analog.
- DVB PVR - Direct to hard disk recording from digital TV.
- Analog PVR - Direct to hard disk from analog TV.
- Video Tape - Captured from videotape. Quality can vary here - Clips range from S-VHS, which are reasonably good quality, through to VHS long play, worn tape or heads.
- Other - Source unknown, although most are likely to be from videotape.
The final way of browsing is by collection, based on the contributor of the clip. Not every contributor has a separate section, in this case the clips are included in Steve's collection.
There are 3 ways to search for clips. Firstly, when viewing a clip, you can click on the name of an actor or on an tag to search for other clips with that actor or tag.
The quick search looks for clips that match your search words, checking title, actors, description and tags.
The advanced search allows you to search more specifically for any combination of title, actors, description and tags. Tags provide a very powerful search, allowing you to search for specific keywords ranging from type (eg wet, muddy) through to specific clothing.
To download a clip, use the download button
. If you are using Internet Explorer, right-click on the button, then select Save Target As. For Firefox, left click, then choose Save File. Before you can download the clip, you will need to enter your username and password.
There are a range of different types of video files in the archives, and it can be challenging to find software that can play them all. Most can be played with newer versions of Windows (XP, Vista 7) with the addition of some extra software:
- Vista and Windows 7 can play .mpeg files, XP will need a DVD decoder such as PowerDVD or Purevideo (paid), or ffdshow or CCCP (free).
- Shark007's codecs - excellent codec pack for Windows 7 and Vista.
- DiVX is needed to play the more recent clips, including the Hires DVD ones if you don't install a codec pack such as Shark007 or CCCP.
- FFDSHOW will handle most of the video types, and can be used as an alternative to a DVD decoder and DiVX.
- The Combined Community Codec Pack supports the majority of formats and will also play mpeg (DVD) and DiVX.
Please note that some of the newer clips are in anamorphic widescreen format. In some circumstances, these play incorrectly and appear squashed. This is a known issue with Windows 7, and can also happen in some cases with FFDSHOW or CCCP. If this happens, the easiest solution is to install DiVX, and view the clips using the DiVX player included in the download. If you are using Windows 7, I strongly recommend that you download and install Shark007's codecs.
